SAFETY ADVICE & EQUIPMENT

Here is a list of items you should carry and some advice on kayaking in Greene County.
SAFETY ITEMS TO PACK
  • Always wear life vest or PFD (personal flotation device). Consider a kayak or paddle specific PFD with more arm room for comfort.
  • A cellphone in a watertight protective case.
  • A whistle.
  • Small First Aid Kit.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Bug repellent.
  • A flashlight​
  • Emergency rain jacket
  • Water & Snacks.
  • A friend (If you have one)
  • Always create a plan of where you will be and what time you expect to be home and tell somebody. Even of your going with friends.
SAFETY TIPS ON CLOTHING
  • Plan on going into the water and dress accordingly.
  • Avoid wearing cotton or clothing that holds water.
  • ​Consider synthetic material that will dry fast when wet.
  • Water shoes with a hard sole. You're not in a swimming pool or at the beach. You will be stepping on rocks and branches.​
LOW HEAD DAMS & STRAINERS
  • Watch for low head dams or strainers. Pull out and go around.
